Michelle Rodriguez May Leave the Fast and Furious Franchise Unless Her Conditions are Met
Earlier this year, The Fate of the Furious was released in theaters and will likely be one the highest grossing films of 2017. As one of Universal Pictures’ most successful franchises, it is no wonder that the studio already has plans to release more Fast & Furious films with two specifically planned for April releases in 2019 and 2021, as well as some ideas for spin-off films. While the films have always had a rotating cast of characters throughout its run, the films have held their success. However, Michelle Rodriguez might depart from the franchise if certain changes she desires for the Fast & Furious films are not met.

Rodriguez posted the image seen above this week to her Instagram account, celebrating the release of The Fate of the Furious on digital HD along with a caption noting her hopes for the future of the series. She notes that she would like to see the studio “show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one.” While somewhat vague, Rodriguez likely means that she would like to see a greater focus of the plot and character development given to the female characters in the franchise. It is not clear whether or not Rodriguez intends to leave before the 9th Fast & Furious film begins production or after this film is made without her suggestions. Nonetheless, her position on the issue and her conditional participation seems quite clear.
If Rodriguez does leave, it would be quite a shake-up to the cast as she is one of the few characters remaining in the series since the original film. Though many fans might find great joy if both Rodriguez stays and the next Fast & Furious film has a greater female perspective.
