Gears of War Movie Hires Armageddon, Aliens vs. Predator Screenwriter
Universal Pictures has had a film based on Epic Games’ popular shooter Gears of War in the works for a number of years now. The video game’s pulse-pounding action and amazing visuals have made it a prime target for a bout on the big screen ever since the first game‘s release in 2006. The project has remained in development hell for the majority of its life, with little to no progress being made in recent years. However, momentum has seemingly changed, because Universal has finally hired a screenwriter for the Gears of War movie.
According to the outlet Variety, writer Shane Salerno has been chosen to write for the sci-fi video game movie, fresh off of joining James Cameron’s Avatar writing team earlier this year. Salerno’s past writing projects include the asteroid disaster film Armageddon, the hyper-violent extraterrestrial clash Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, and the criminal shootout flick Savages. With credits like these, it’s easy to understand why he was tapped for the job of bringing the mad world of Gears of War to life.
When a potential Gears of War adaptation was announced back in 2007, the movie was to be produced by New Line Cinema, but rights have since gone over to the guys at Universal Pictures. As the studio has made absurd mountains of cash with the Lord of the Rings, Fast & Furious, and Jurassic World franchises, it may be a safe bet that the Gears of War movie is in good hands.
