New PS5 Update Adds M.2 SSD Support, UX Enhancements, And More
Sony has officially announced the details of the upcoming PS5 system update for September 2021. Having successfully made its way through beta testing this past August, the new PS5 update brings with it (finally!) official support for M.2 SSD storage expansion options. Also on the table are several UX enhancements, 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers, and more.
Sony took to its PlayStation blog site to detail what’s to come in the September 2021 PS5 update. Releasing on September 15, the update first and foremost offers official support for M.2 SSD’s, which can be installed in both versions of the PS5. As long as the drives meet the minimum performance and size requirements, users will be able to download, copy, and launch PS4 games, PS5 games, and media apps directly from the drive.
As for the other goodies included in September’s PS5 update, Sony is also implementing 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers. Enabled within the Sound menu, the feature “transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion.” This is used in conjunction with the DualSense’s microphone in order to measure the acoustics of the room.
The PS5 update also brings with it some nifty UX enhancements that will offer a few customization and personalization options. It’s unfortunately not full-blown themes, but it’s a small step in the right direction. Following the update, users will be able to customize their Control Center by choosing which controls to hide or unhide. Also included are new Screen Reader controls, separate game listings for both PS4 and PS5 versions of the same title (if they’re both installed), and a new Accolade type for those playing in online matches. There is now an option to automatically capture “personal best” clips for those competing to break their high scores/set new personal bests.
There are a few miscellaneous updates regarding the PS5 Remote Play App and enhancements to the PS App, as well as a few PS4 console enhancements. Those can be found at the bottom of the blog site here.
