PS5 Shortages Could Last Until 2022, Sony Warns

PS5 PlayStation 5 Dualsense

While the new age of next-gen has finally arrived on the scene, it hasn’t exactly arrived for everyone. Boasting new innovations in performance, visuals, and control, the PS5 has been extremely sought-after since debuting last November, and Sony has nonetheless had trouble moving enough units to meet demand. Owed to sustained anticipation as well as a number of pandemic and other related complications, these supply issues now appear to have pushed well beyond Sony’s initial expectations.

As revealed in a recent investor briefing, Sony now expects PS5 shortages to continue for the remainder of 2021 and into 2022 as well. Sony Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki divulged the news in a statement reported by Bloomberg, suggesting, “I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand.”

Though shortages are prevalent, Sony has nonetheless achieved massive success with the launch of the PlayStation 5, having moved over 7.8 million units in its first several months alone. Despite the extended shortages ahead, Totoki maintained that Sony would need to immediately increase production to ensure consoles are still available in some capacity and to eventually reach its current sales goal of 14.8 million units by the end of the 2021 fiscal year.

”We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily.”

Since 2020, PS5 and other consoles’ supply has been very sporadic with restocks regularly selling out very shortly after going live. These shortages have been attributed to semiconductor and other related supply issues that are expected to endure well into 2022. Though PS5 sales aren’t completely living up to their potential at the moment, it’s likely Sony won’t have too much to worry about in the future, especially if they can manage to sufficiently ramp up production in time for next year.

What do you think? Are you bummed that the PS5 won’t be at 100% readiness until next year, or are you one of the lucky 7.8 million that have received their console already?
