Sony Discord Partnership Brings The Service To PlayStation

After weeks of speculation surrounding the communication company, Discord has officially entered into a partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The development was announced in a new company blog post, the Sony Discord deal would see the “social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network” connected with the service across consoles as well as the mobile app, bringing the Sony platform in line with the cited “over 140 million” users who regularly populate the messaging service every month.

“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network,” Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said regarding the Sony Discord partnership. “Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”

As stated above, the Sony Discord partnership will begin to bear fruit beginning “next year” as the communication service rolls out across the PlayStation platform. As an added measure, the blog post also revealed a financial investment on the part of Sony, as the company contributed “a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round.” In closing, more about this prolific partnership was teased to be revealed sometime in the coming months.

“From our very first conversation with co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, I was inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways,” Jim Ryan continued. “Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”

“It’s always a privilege to work with great partners to bring fresh experiences to our fans, and we’ll have more to share in the coming months.”

This latest partnership comes after over a month following reports suggesting Discord was discussing the idea of a Microsoft acquisition. However, as talks died down, it appears Sony has swooped in with a deal of its own, and while not an acquisition, the partnership nonetheless looks to be beneficial for both sides of the aisle. For starters, Discord receives a massive new addition to its userbase while Sony gets increased functionality of its platform. While details aren’t too clear about what either might entail, the coming months, fortunately, promise to provide the answer.
