Epic Games Announces ArtStation Acquisition

It’s not often that you hear news of creative platforms getting acquired by video game publishers and developers but just last week, Epic Games announced their acquisition of ArtStation. Much like Behance and Dribbble are for graphic designers, ArtStation is website that gives artists across industries a hub to share their talent, find job opportunities, and discover inspiration.

ArtStation gives members the chance to purchase works of art, and learn new skills to improve their repertoire. Despite the acquisition and help they have received from Epic Games, ArtStation will continue operating independently. Their mission is to empower artists across various industries, including games, media, and entertainment.

According to ArtStation, “ArtStation will remain an independently branded platform owned by Epic Games and will continue its mission to empower creators to thrive. You can still use the platform as you do today, and we will continue to be open to all creators across verticals, both 2D and 3D alike – including those that don’t use Unreal Engine. We’ll be actively hiring and growing the ArtStation team. We’re committed to improving the platform and now as a part of Epic, we’ll be able to do much more.”

Epic Games added, “At Epic, ArtStation will continue to operate as an independently branded platform while collaborating closely with the Unreal Engine team. By joining forces, the ArtStation and Unreal Engine teams will be able to empower the creative community with expanded tools, resources, and connections. And starting today, we will be reducing ArtStation Marketplace fees so creators can get even more value from the ArtStation platform. ArtStation Learning will also be free to all users for the remainder of 2021.”

From here on out, ArtStation Marketplace will increase the earning potential of sellers by dropping fees from 30% to 12%. Pro members will see more significant numbers with reductions down to 8%, and 5% for self-promoted sales. To make matters even sweeter, ArtStation Learning is free to all members for the rest of the year. It provides unlimited access to a library of videos where artists can learn and improve their professional skills.

Sounds like a wonderful partnership for artists and aspiring artists alike. Whether you’re into concept art, learning videos, or looking to purchase prints — ArtStation is a great resource.
