Gundam Is Getting A New Live-Action Movie For Netflix
While anime has evolved by leaps and bounds over the past few decades, Gundam still holds up as being one of the most beloved anime series since its inception in 1979. Since the release of Mobile Suit Gundam, the franchise has flitted between various anime series, movies, OVA’s, and compilations, making it one of the longest-running anime series to grace the small screen. Now, it’s been revealed that Gundam is getting a new live-action movie for Netflix, as a collaboration between Sunrise and Legendary Entertainment.
Netflix took to Twitter today to announce that Gundam creator Sunrise is working with Legendary Entertainment on a new live-action movie exclusive to the streaming service, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts tapped to direct. Vogt-Roberts’ most recent accolades include Kong: Skull Island, as well as the upcoming live-action Metal Gear Solid movie featuring Oscar Isaac.

The initial announcement is devoid of any story details or a release window, though the reveal is good enough to get fans excited for what’s to come. While there’s plenty of source material to draw upon, it’s a bit more likely that Legendary Entertainment and Sunrise will be shooting for something completely original.
This is by no means the first live-action adaptation Netflix has greenlit based on an older anime series, with season 1 of the live-action Cowboy Bebop series having just recently wrapped this past March. Netflix has also been dipping into the proverbial video game cookie jar as of late, with live-action series based on Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed already in development.
