One doesn’t normally think of Star Wars when social game developer Zynga gets mentioned, though that may change in the near future. It’s been announced that Zynga will be developing a “premiere mobile game” in the Star Wars universe, and the company is opening a brand new studio for the project.

Zynga has announced that it will be opening a new studio based out of its office in Austin, Texas to work on a new Star Wars game. The studio will be helmed by industry vets Jeff Hickman and Matthew Hemby, and the project team will include Zynga subsidiary NaturalMotion, which previously worked on the now-shuttered Star Wars: Commander mobile game. “As a longtime Austinite, I know firsthand the immense level of talent and creativity that resides in this beautiful city,” said Jeff Hickman.

We believe that the Austin talent market is highly compatible with our mission of bringing AAA console visuals and deep, compelling gameplay to mobile platforms.”

As for what type of game this new Star Wars title will be, it’s currently anyone’s guess. That said, EA still holds the rights to “develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience,” so the only remaining rights Disney has to dole out would fall within the “mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.” Given Zynga’s track record, a social-based Star Wars game would seem to be right up their alley.

The new Star Wars mobile game will likely be available for Android and iOS mobile devices.
