Rainbow Six Siege Next Gen Plans Revealed, Features Cross-Generation Multiplayer
Ubisoft is kicking off the first season of Rainbow Six Siege’s fifth year with Operation Void Edge. Now live on their test server with a long patch notes list, you can check out Oryx and Iana in action. Despite going strong for several years in a row, packing on regular content updates, there’s no denying the coming of next generation consoles. The devs behind Rainbow Six Siege already have plans in the works, including cross-generation multiplayer.
Game director Leroy Athanassof said the team have plans to launch the same day the next generation consoles do. They’re currently undergoing motions and preparations as the platforms approach their debut. With that said, they don’t have a solid date quite yet.
“Why I can’t give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles,” Athanassof told Windows Central. “What I can tell you is that we are going to be on from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it’s up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.”
Despite investing resources to create a seamless transition into next-generation gaming platforms for Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft doesn’t want to break their community by cutting off PS4 and Xbox One owners from the upcoming shift. They’re currently working on cross-generation multiplayer to keep it tight-knit. Athanassof said, “That means if you play on the next PlayStation, you will be able to matchmake with the previous PlayStation.”
Athanassoff also mentioned they’ve dabbled with the idea of crossplay but it’s entirely up to Microsoft and Sony. “Again, this is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony,” he mentioned in fairness. “We would love to be fully cross-play — have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen because as I said, it’s a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It’s just a matter of time before it happens.”
That’s certainly an interesting prospect and one we’d be interested in seeing come to full realization. Hopefully the days of resisting cross-play will be discussions of old, but it might be later down the line.
