Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution Reveals Nostalgic New Trailer (VIDEO)

Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution Reveals New Trailer (VIDEO)

There have been inklings of a remake for Pokemon: The First Movie (a.k.a. Mewtwo Strikes Back) for a while now, but all was finally confirmed earlier this year with the announcement of Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. While that initial reveal showed off a number of scenes fans would surely recognize, an all-new trailer has premiered an even bigger bevy of nostalgic imagery recreated with modern CGI.

Though this new trailer is entirely in Japanese, it’s easy to see “Evolution” is strongly adhering to the original story from the 90s; following protagonist trio Ash Ketchum, Brock, and Misty in their confrontation with the supreme psychic Pokemon Mewtwo. The movie also appears to borrow heavily in the looks department, having perfectly replicated a number of scenes featured in the original such as Mewtwo’s mech armor, an appearance from Mew, and Pikachu’s battle with a clone counterpart. Check out the trailer below.

Of course, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is only one Pokemon movie making its debut over the summer as Detective Pikachu also has plans to bring Pocket Monsters to life with CGI. While the former is sticking to more traditional variations of the titular critters, Warner Bros. Pictures has instead gone a more realistic route. While often resulting in some truly adorable Pokemon, this approach has also produced such horrors as Gyarados and Lickitung.

Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution hits Japanese theaters on July 12th. No US release date has been confirmed as of yet.
