It looks like Netflix’s upcoming The Witcher series was almost very different based on showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich’s initial pitch. Instead of an almost equal focus between Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer, and Ciri, Hissrich’s original plan was to keep Ciri at the forefront of the show as both its focus and its narrator in a show that would have been based on the original series’ fifth book, The Lady of the Lake. Unfortunately, Hissrich determined that the pitch was lacking something necessary to make The Witcher show work.

“I realised as I started writing that version that I wasn’t getting enough of Geralt and his perspective, because it was being told through Ciri,” Hissrich reveals in a recent interview at MCM Comic Con. “So it actually took me a while, I went through several versions.” What these other versions are aren’t really explained, though her end result involved The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, the first two books, mixed in with a few things that are unique to the Netflix series.

Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia may be the star of the show, though Lauren S. Hissrich has made it quite clear that both Yennefer and Ciri get plenty of time in the spotlight. “What I wanted to capture is these women before they were seen through the lens of anyone else,” Hissrich revealed. “In the books, all the characters are met through Geralt, so you get Geralt’s impression of them, then you get to meet them, and I wanted the world to see Ciri who she was first.” How this will all go over once the series airs later this month has yet to be determined, though first reactions paint the show in a positive light.

Netflix’s The Witcher series releases on December 20, 2019.
