Call Of Duty: Black Ops 5 Experiencing Troubled Development, Says Reports

Call of Duty may be gearing up for a gritty and boundary-pushing installment with this month’s Modern Warfare reboot, but the long-running shooter franchise is also confirmed to launch yet another entry sometime in 2020. Though little official information is currently available on the subject, plenty appears to be available through unofficial channels, with reports pegging the developing project as none other than Call of Duty: Black Ops 5.

With the annual Call of Duty release expected to drop next October, new reports suggest the project may be in trouble behind the scenes. This news comes from prolific COD leaker TheGameRevolution, who held a recent Q&A on Twitter regarding the future of the franchise. When asked about Black Ops 5, TGR’s source revealed development is only at “3/10,” suggesting there’s still a large majority of work left before next year’s release. Additionally, the insider notes of contention regarding the game’s title, with devs bouncing between the numbered “Black Ops 5,” non-numbered in the vein of Modern Warfare, or “another Black Ops themed name” altogether.

A hugely-anticipated game like Black Ops 5 experiencing development trouble would surely be a shame for fans as well as the devs themselves. Though, such a notion isn’t entirely surprising considering the project’s messy upheaval reported back in May. It was said that Treyarch unexpectedly took over the development of BO5 from Sledgehammer Games following reports of a contentious working environment. Though some headway was made on the project, Treyarch was left with only two years of development time before the game’s release in 2020.

As it would be easy to run away with speculation, it should go without saying that unconfirmed rumors be taken with a grain of salt. Though, if we do take this report into account, it may be understandable why only “3/10” of the game is completed at this time. Treyarch would’ve only had less than a year to work at this point, making a third’s worth of progress an impressive feat in the grand scheme of things. It might also explain why so little information has come out about the game as of late, as BO5 development would still be in relatively early days compared to where Modern Warfare was 10 months ago.

The next Call of Duty is scheduled to release sometime in 2020.

What do you think? Are you worried about how Black Ops 5 might turn out, or are you confident of Treyarch’s abilities? What do you think the game’s title should be?
