New PlayStation 5 Details Could Mean The End Of Loading Screens Altogether
Though they’ve gotten faster over the years and in some cases, done in the background such as in open world titles, loading screens have played a major part in video games for quite a long time. As technology continues to grow and load times continue to get faster, players have been given a more immersive experience as time progresses. Sony, in particular, seems to be on the verge of a breakthrough and has recently filed a continuation patent that’s aiming to get rid of loading screens altogether for the PlayStation 5.
The technology from the patent aims to split environments into separate segments that load independent of each other. In turn, this will allow for loading times to be faster and more smooth, possibly even eliminating loading screens if all goes according to plan. This would be a major benefit for all games especially open-world titles that tend to have moments where player immersion is halted for a moment or two in order to get content ready for play.
A system and method are disclosed for dynamically loading game software for smooth game play. A load boundary associated with a game environment is identified. A position of a character in the game environment is then monitored. Instructions corresponding to a next game environment are loaded into a memory when the character crosses the load boundary, such that game play is not interrupted.
The upcoming PlayStation 5 is already going to have some impressive load times thanks to its solid-state drive giving players somewhere over 19x faster loading over the PlayStation 4. Whether or not players can expect to see the recent patent find its way onto the platform or on different one down the road for Sony is unclear, but one thing is certain. The days of loading times are numbered.
