Former Head of Sonic Team Yuji Naka Joins Square Enix, New Game Teased

Yuji Naka

Anyone with a modicum of awareness of the video game industry would undoubtedly acknowledge the lasting impact and presence of Sonic the Hedgehog. The fast blue rodent helped put Sega on the map and became the first big video gaming mascot that could rival the massive force of Nintendo’s Mario. Sonic has starred in numerous video games, and has spawned many comic and animated series, as well as an upcoming movie. One important figure who has been present throughout Sonic’s history has been head of Sonic Team Yuji Naka, who has now announced his new employment at Square Enix.

Yuji Naka has announced via his personal Twitter account that he has joined gaming giant Square Enix. According to Naka’s tweet, he began his new development position at Square Enix earlier this month, and expressed a desire to make a game that audiences would enjoy in the future. Naka does not mention if the game is a part of any Square Enix’s popular pre-existing franchises, or anything else about the game. Given Naka’s history, he does seem like a good fit for the company and can be trusted to make a game that elicits a welcoming response from gamers.

Yuji Naka first joined Sega in 1983 and served as the lead programmer on the original Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games. Naka later became the head of Sonic Team where he oversaw many Sonic games until leaving the company in 2006 to form an independent gaming studio, called Prope. We here at Don’t Feed the Gamers wish Yuji Naka all the best at Square Enix, and hope that his new projects gotta go fast to gaming devices soon.
