YouTubers Meg Turney And Gavin Free Survive Home Invasion By Armed Fan
UPDATE: KXAN subsequently report that, contrary to that preliminary examination, it was in fact police who killed Christopher Giles.
YouTubers Meg Turney and Gavin Free were the targets of a recent home invasion, according to an Albuquerque journal report. The report reveals that the celebrity YouTube couple were forced to hide in a closet within their home in Austin, Texas while a man armed with a gun searched their home, firing at least one round off from inside the house.
The armed assailant was revealed to be Christopher Giles, who the report describes as “single, lonely, and disturbed.” The report also states that Giles was “an avid player of videogames and was known for watching YouTube videos that were centered on his hobby,” and that he had “developed a fondness” for Meg Turney, as well as a resentment of her boyfriend, Gavin Free.
According to the report, “A search of Giles’ cellular phone identified various notations identifying Megan Turney and Gavin Free by name. Furthermore, threatening thoughts were recorded by Giles and directed toward Gavin Free, ie., ‘I want Gavin Free to die alone, with no children’.”
Giles reportedly broke into the home of YouTubers Meg Turney and Gavin Free at around 3:40 am on January 26, firing at least one shot while inside. While the couple was in hiding they managed to call the police. After searching the home and failing to find the couple, Giles left the house and got back into his car.
According to the report:
“Two officers arrived at the home one minute after the 911 caller heard the gunshots. As they approached the home, Giles was about to drive off when they gave him commands to stop. At that time, police say Giles, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, shot at the officers. Officer Matthew Jackson returned gunfire, striking the suspect. The suspect died at the scene. No officers were injured.”
This is one of many recent incidents involving altercations between gaming celebrities and groups of gamers, with late 2017 being peppered with oft-times fatal Swatting incidents. Meg Turney joined Rooster Teeth back in 2014 and is a popular streamer on Twitch. Gavin Free is the co-creator and co-host of the Slow Mo Guys series on YouTube.
