Xbox Boss Promises That Microsoft Is Working Towards More First Party Content
Many of us can agree that Phil Spencer taking over the Xbox Brand has done wonders in the last few years. Prior to his taking over, the Xbox lost its way a little bit from a gaming focused and more into an all-in-one entertainment machine. Because of this, Xbox has seen a lot of jokes at its expense about lack of games, and exclusives, when compared to its Sony counterpart. Spencer himself has stated this past year that he aims to change that and has been quite busy speaking with other companies about more story-driven games, more JRPGs, and cross-play. But what about Microsoft’s first party content?
Spencer recently sat down with VentureBeat to discuss the brand and their future goals. In addition to the promise for “positive change,” the Xboss has also stated that first party content is something they are wanting to re-invest heavily in:
“I’m not deaf to the meme out there regarding our content and our need to invest more,” he explained. “Definitely, we are at a point where we’re investing more and we’ll continue to do that. When I look at Matt and his responsibility with his team, it’s about charting our future in first-party content. I feel like with each one of the leaders we have, there’s an existing plan, and I feel good about that plan, but we know that the plan all-up for studios is expanding. Having Matt’s [Booty] leadership there in navigating the expansion, what bets we make, the teams we bet on, the teams we create, is going to be critical.
“Some of it is with the existing leaders we have there, and there are always opportunities to do more with the teams we have. But also, as we expand, having a leader in place so new investments can be driven and land in the strategy we have is going to be critical for me. That’s really where I look at Matt’s focus: both the existing franchises, and equally, if not a little more, thinking about our future content and how that growth happens in a thoughtful way, a way that delivers for our fans.”
This of course comes after the announcement that Matt Booty has taken over as Spencer’s second in command – a big leap from leading the Minecraft division. It’s already looking like some of those promises are seeing fruition if some of the rumors end up being true; that Fable reboot report especially has our eye. For now, we wait – but Spencer does promise a BIG E3, which gives us 5 long months to speculate.
