REPORT: New Fable Game In Progress With Forza Horizon 3 Developer
According to reports, a new Fable game is currently in progress under Playground Games, the same developer that created the Forza Horizon series with the most recent release of Forza Horizon 3. Safe to say, this is most certainly one of the most unexpected developments for the franchise. Lionhead, the original studio that worked on the series, was shut down in 2016 and ceased any possibility of continuation unless former employees took initiative.
However, some time has passed since then, and Microsoft may be at the helm in partnership with Playground. Revealed in November, the latter studio obtained a large office space to house about 200 personnel, which suggests a large project planned and a huge influx of skill and talent.
It’s no secret that Microsoft has been interested in revitalizing the Fable series after all, especially since Xbox general manager, Shannon Loftis, spoke at PAX Australia last year. However, does it make sense to place the fate of a classic franchise into the hands of a team that’s solely worked on racing titles? Fable co-creator, Simon Carter, has “mixed feelings” on the ordeal, saying:
I have slightly mixed feelings. On the one hand it’s great for the UK games industry, and very pleasing that Fable isn’t dead; indeed, it will be lovely to play one as a punter without coming out in hives.
On the other hand it is a little curious to get rid of the team that is uniquely expert in making Fable, and then try and make Fable. Fable is a weird game, and a tough one to deconstruct for a new team. That said, the team in question is very talented, and I’m sure they’ll do a fantastic job.”
As has been said, Playground Games has talent. Perhaps hidden behind the racing titles are RPG lovers waiting to show off what they’ve got.
