A remade and remastered version of the fan-favorite Warcraft III had been in the works for a while, with reception at-first seeming pretty enthusiastic regarding the nostalgic project. However, the actual game has proven to be much more of a disappointment, with critic and audience reviews both taking the RTS title to task about its perceived hollow features and general lack of polish. The reception has become so poor in recent days that Blizzard has even offered refunds to any player upon request.
Ten days removed from launch, Blizzard president Allen Brack has issued a statement on the Warcraft III: Reforged backlash, speaking about the “hard week” during a recent Activision investor call (via Prima Games). Brack addressed that the game did not meet fans’ “amazing” expectations, admitting the company “did not achieve that bar.” That being said, the Blizzard president iterated that the team will “stand behind” Warcraft III: Reforged, expressing a commitment to provide a host of post-launch updates to make the game more worthwhile.
“Concerning Warcraft 3: Reforged, honestly, it’s been a bit of a hard week. Our community has come to expect really amazing things from us, and we’ve heard from them that we did not achieve that bar,” Brack said. “But we stand behind our games and have consistently shown that not only do we support them, but we continue to build on them even after launch. And we’re committed to doing that here as well. We’re going to continue to update the game, and we’re going to continue to update the community with our plans going forward.”
One of these teased quality-of-life updates went live just yesterday, the patch addressing several reported issues with gameplay, progression, and the overall look of the game. While there will certainly need to be many more updates before all major bugs are resolved, Blizzard has since extended an olive branch to players by offering a means to refund their purchase. As mentioned in a recent support post, Blizzard is stepping back from their traditionally limited refund policy to allow anyone who bought Warcraft III: Reforged to get their money back.
We want to give players the option of a refund if they feel that Warcraft III: Reforged does not provide the experience they wanted. So, we’ve decided to allow refunds upon request for the time being. You may request a refund here on our Support Site.”
Warcraft III: Reforged is available now for Mac and PC.
