Valorant Competitive Mode, Ranked Details Outlined By Riot Games
After some time now in its first closed beta phase, Riot Games has begun to dole out information on the upcoming competitive mode for its free-to-play FPS, Valorant. According to Riot, said mode will be arriving in an upcoming update to the game “soon after patch 0.49” for the folks lucky enough to have obtained access to the closed beta.
Riot Games recently took to its official Valorant website to offer up a significant amount of information regarding the upcoming competitive mode for the game. According to Riot, once competitive mode is implemented in the closed beta, both that mode and the unrated mode will be treated as works in progress by the developer, though Riot may disable competitive mode during different parts of the beta to work on implementing changes.

As with League of Legends, ranks will span from Iron to Diamond in competitive mode. Above these ranked categories are two separate ranks: Immortal and Valorant. Within all these ranks will be three different tiers – unlike League of Legends, which has four tiers – that players will need to climb before getting to the next actual rank. Unlike League, players will not have to worry about their rank decaying over time, which is a nice change. “Your personal performance will have a greater impact on the early evaluation of your skill, but will decrease in importance when compared to wins, as we home in on your skill over time,” Riot said.
Competitive mode also measures how decisively you win or lose. We figure, if there is a benefit to your rank that comes from playing your best for the entire match, it will incentivize you to stay in the fight and not throw games.”
Here’s the “bite-size summary” of competitive mode, courtesy of Riot:
- Complete 20 Unrated matches to unlock Competitive mode
- 8 ranks, 3 tiers each, except the top rank, VALORANT
- Queue with up to 5-player parties, must be within 2 ranks
- Rank isn’t displayed if competitive matches aren’t played within 14 days, but your rank doesn’t decay behind the scenes.
- Closed beta rank does not carry over to launch
Valorant is now in closed beta on PC.
