League Of Legends Could Be An Olympic Sport, Says Riot Games

Olympic Sport

As the medium of video games continues to grown more accepted into mainstream culture, eSports have grown in both popularity and visibility. Formerly relegated to small conventions and livestreams, now eSports events are televised and pack large stadiums. One of the biggest games in the world of eSports is League of Legends, which has similarly exploded in cultural popularity in tandem with eSports. The series has seen spinoff games expanding from its MOBA origins, and even has a new animated series that premiered this past week on Netflix. Now, Riot Games has suggested that League of Legends could be an official Olympic sport in the future.

Olympic Sport

Dexerto recently released new information from a conversation they held with global head of League of Legends eSports Naz Aletaha of Riot Games. The game made a big step forward for eSports in major international competitions with the inclusion of LoL in the 2018 Asian Games as one of six titles showcased for the event, and it will return as a medal event in 2022. With that progress made, many have wondered whether it might be possible to see League of Legends included as an official Olympic sport in the big games. As Aletaha confirms, providing some hope:

We continue to have conversations with the various leaders at the Olympics. The events that are contested at the Summer and Winter Olympics are ultimately a decision for the IOC. In the meantime, we remain focused on delivering great LoL Esports experiences directly to our fans.”

The International Olympic Committee has been more inclusive of non-traditional sports recently, adding the likes of skateboarding at Tokyo 2020 and breakdancing in the upcoming Paris 2024 games. It should be noted though that even if the IOC were to include League of Legends as an Olympic sport, the earliest games they would be able to be present in would be the 2028 games in Los Angeles. Still, for eSports fans hoping to see Jinx and friends on the Olympic stage, hopefully this is just the Nexus of what an Olympic League of Legends showdown could become.
