Remember back in the early days of videogames when there were no checkpoints or auto saving features and you only had 3 lives? Yeah, I remember those times, they shaped me into the gamer I am today and do you know what else I remember? The intense frustration of losing that last life and having to start all over again. This was especially infuriating with Super Mario. Just in time for Halloween the hilarious team over at Nukazooka’s YouTube channel put together an awesome, if not a bit disturbing, look at what actually happens to all the plumber lives lost as they take us on a creepy journey through the 8-bit underworld. Now that’s one creepy Mushroom Kingdom worthy of Halloween. The zombie Luigi bit was definitely among one of the highlights as well the undead acid spewing mushroom. The 3 minute and 51 second short is a perfect blend of nostalgia, comedy, and suspense.

I’m a sucker for a happy ending so I was delighted to see our favorite blockbusting princess saving plumber get a second chance via the recently deceased Lakitu cloud. Today’s gaming landscape is ripe with checkpoints, auto save features, and endless respawning; I’m not sure if that adds to or takes away from contemporary video games but I do know that for those of us who endured the struggle of only having only 3 lives that we appreciate the advancements in gaming all that much more.
