Until Dawn 2 Not Happening Anytime Soon, Here’s Why
The PlayStation 4 has found great success in the current gaming console generation, which many have attributed to its exclusive titles. One such PS4 exclusive that was highly praised was Until Dawn, which gave players a horror game narrative experience highly impacted by the player’s choices. With such compelling gameplay and relatable characters, many have been wondering when a follow-up game would be released. Supermassive Games, the developer of the game, has spoken now about why Until Dawn 2 has yet to take shape.
Supermassive Games recently was interviewed by GameInformer about their library of games and plans for the future. Since Until Dawn, the developer has released several action-adventure and horror games with heavy narratives, with one of them being a VR spinoff of Until Dawn, and another being a prequel. What these games have all had in common is that aside from some connections to the Until Dawn story, they largely have been self-contained stories that did not require knowledge of the Until Dawn story or characters. When asked if Supermassive ever intended to make an Until Dawn 2, CEO Pete Samuels gave this response:
If we were making sequels, we don’t know who survived. I mean we could probably work it out from your game save, but we don’t want to make a sequel to that. We want to make a different story with different people.”
Samuels also mentioned that Supermassive is aware of the fan requests and demand for the return of the original Until Dawn story and characters. However, the complications of knowing what characters to retain and to write around all of the alternate endings of Until Dawn would be quite difficult, which is why the developer has preferred to move onto wholly separate storylines. While there may not be an Until Dawn sequel any time soon, the game’s spirit certainly seems to live on with the other works by Supermassive Games.
