Uncharted Director Confirms Film Won't Adapt The Franchise's Story

Despite having been announced what feels like years ago, the highly anticipated Uncharted movie adaptation has been shrouded in secret, with one of the only hard known facts being that Spider-Man actor Tom Holland will be playing a young version of Nathan Drake. Given the fact that he is specifically playing a younger version of the treasure hunter we’ve all come to know and love, one could assume that the film plans to tell a story that has yet to be played out in any particular game within the series. This seems to be the case, with recent confirmation from the Uncharted movie director Dan Trachtenberg.

Trachtenberg recently sat down with the folks over at GamesRadar to discuss the upcoming film, and how he plans to forge a path different from what was already seen within the video games. “[I] have been approached with different versions of this tale, and have always been not that interested in it because I didn’t really want to trace the game,” he said.

I didn’t really feel like it was at all worthy of making a video game adaptation, [if[ we’re just gonna copy what the game is and just serve people a lesser experience than what they’ve experienced in such an incredible way.”

What Trachtenberg does have planned, though, is so expertly put together by the creative team that Naughty Dog would apparently take notes from it should the studio ever choose to revisit the franchise. “If Naughty Dog so chose to make another Uncharted game featuring Nate and Sully… this movie’s story is probably the story that they would want to tell.” Here’s hoping the film lives up to his lofty expectations.

The Uncharted film is slated to hit theaters on December 18, 2020.
