Ubisoft Responds to Doubt Concerning The Division’s Future
Last week, Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment announced the beginning of a high-profile project with James Cameron’s Avatar with a video publicizing the collaboration. It will be a video game project that allows players to experience Pandora in all it’s glory, be it the dangers or beauty the world has to offer. The details concerning the genre and style of gaming remains a mystery with the vague introduction, but one thing is clear – this will be a huge undertaking for everyone. At most, the public has been made aware that the Snowdrop game engine will be used. So, it isn’t hard to believe that current games and tasks that the company has under their belt may be compromised, especially concerning The Division. Ubisoft responds to inquiries by Eurogamer who, in an effort to find out more pertaining to their workload status, reached out for comment:
Avatar is a new project with its own dedicated team and Massive is currently recruiting top talent to work on it. Avatar’s development has no impact on the team working on The Division or on our plans to continually support and update the game and brand for the long term.
We’re proud of what the team has accomplished with The Division, thankful for our community’s dedication, and looking forward to sharing more about what’s coming next for the game very soon.”
This is good news, of course. Massive Entertainment itself is a 400 person entity and, most likely, will only have a moderate effect on the teams currently working on other projects. An Avatar game will be quite the endeavor, but it wouldn’t make sense to funnel as many personnel as possible onto just one project, but temporarily utilizing talent from subsidiaries makes absolute sense. Not only would one have to consider the scope of the collaboration, but the actual moneymakers to allow for the leeway are current responsibilities such as For Honor, Wildlands, Watch Dogs 2, The Division, etc. There is that fact to respect, as well.
Ubisoft responds with an answer some players hope to hear, but will it reflect in future actions? What are your thoughts on the potential for The Division 2? Do you think it has been cancelled?
