WATCH: David Jaffe Discusses Twisted Metal And Hopes For The Future

Twisted Metal Franchise

Ah, Twisted Metal. The destruction derby from Hell that at one time was one of the hottest games to appear on the original PlayStation console. It later continued onto the PlayStation 2 with Twisted Metal Black, which was the first to feature a Mature rating and some consider to be the best of the entire series. While Twisted Metal Black was re-released onto the PlayStation 4, unfortunately that seemed to be the extent of it. The man who created the incredibly unique destruction derby series, David Jaffe, recently sat down to discuss what happened to the franchise and where it might go next.

Jaffe explains in the video below that Sony owns the rights to the Twisted Metal franchise, and he has no idea whether or not the company is working on continuing the series. Sony has kept him in the loop in the past about franchises he was heavily involved in, but at this time he hasn’t heard any word on any work being done on “Twisted.”  He then went on by elaborating that the most likely scenario for the series to return in any way would be through remasters, going through and rebuilding one of the earlier titles from the ground up.

If there was to be a completely new IP, which group of people would the developers cater to? Jaffe mentioned that the only model in which it could work effectively would be a cheap base game and plenty of added content if the title does well, similar to how Rocket League operates. The danger of doing this however would be leaning more towards a focus on a destruction derby combat rather than the lore and bosses of previous titles. Many players enjoyed the story within the game, seeing less of a focus on that and turning it into a pure vehicular destruction title could ruin that experience for them, which in turn could hurt the brand.

There is still quite a lot of interest in the series, sadly we still don’t know whether that interest is enough to spark the production of a new title. Could fans see the likes of Calypso and Needles Kane/Sweet Tooth return? Let us know your thoughts on Jaffe’s talk on the Twisted Metal Franchise and more in the comments section below.
