Trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘The Shape of Water’ Hits the Web (VIDEO)

Guillermo Del Toro's 'The Shape of Water' Hits the Web (VIDEO)

Imaginative director Guillermo del Toro has been gracing cinemas with his strange and fantastical monsters for years now, bringing to life the likes of Pacific RimPan’s Labyrinth, and most famously, the Hellboy film series. Although a few of his most anticipated projects have been stopped in their tracks in recent years, the filmmaker has put those plans behind him and moved forward with the new fantasy drama The Shape of Water. A new trailer for the film promises to deliver another interesting and visually stunning film one expects from the visionary director. Check out the video and official synopsis below:

From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes  The Shape of Water – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.”

The so-called “classified experiment” mentioned above is notably played by Doug Jones, who has a long history of portraying unusual monsters in del Toro’s films. The actor’s most famous role, the fish-man Abe Sapien in 2004’s Hellboy, shares more than a few similarities to Shape of Water‘s aquatic creature. The actor spoke with Movies.com not too long ago, revealing a few more details about his character, including how the film’s Cold War setting ties into why the creature is in government hands.

I’m a fish man that’s kind of a one-off,” he said. “I’m an enigma, nobody knows where I came from; I’m the last of my species so I’m like a natural anomaly. And I’m being studied and tested in a US government facility in 1963. The Russian Cold War is on, the race for space is on, so there’s all that backdrop and that undercurrent. I’m being tested to find out how can they use me for advantages in military or space travel. So they’re trying to keep me a secret from the Russians.”

Jones went on to speak about how Sally Hawkins’ role of Elisa will be portrayed in the film, and that fans will become instantly attached to her. He even notes that del Toro tends to give viewers an underdog to root for, and this movie is no exception.

“Sally Hawkins plays a very sympathetic character, a woman you’re just going to fall in love with,” he continued. “You’re going to be rooting for her every step. It’s a classic Del Toro movie where we root for an underdog in very impossible circumstances, and I’m a part of all of that in a very, very integral way.”

What do you think? Does The Shape of Water look like yet another great Guillermo del Toro film, or does it just look okay? Is this film a secret Abe Sapien prequel?
