The Witcher’s Henry Cavill Leaves Superman Role For Netflix Series

Witcher Henry Cavill Superman Netflix

Henry Cavill made waves on the web with his casting as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s upcoming The Witcher series, with the actor’s calls for fulfilling the role being answered earlier this month. This high-profile landing came as a surprise for many as Cavill had already held notable commitments elsewhere as Superman in DC’s superhero movie universe. However, it seems this is no longer the case as Cavill’s role of the heroic Kryptonian has now been officially exited.

This shocking departure happens after five years of donning the blue tights and nearly a week following the Geralt casting. The actor made his super-debut in 2013’s Man of Steel and most recently returned for the 2017 team-up film Justice League. This seemed to solidify his long-term presence under the cape, but all those plans have apparently changed according to The Hollywood Reporter.

With DC’s movie universe going forward with an adaptation of hero Shazam, rumors of negotiations have been swirling for weeks over a possible cameo from the big blue boy scout. However, an obstacle came about when Mr. Cavill’s new Netflix partnership further complicated his schedule. According to a source with THR, talks fell through due to the actor’s newfound unavailability, as inhabiting the Man of Steel ultimately seemed to pale in comparison to The Witcher’s resident White Wolf.

While this scenario seems pretty likely (Geralt is Geralt after all), THR also reported the claims of a conflicting source, alternatively stating that Henry Cavill was let go from DC before being cast by Netflix. This would suggest DC and Warner Bros are preparing for a big shake-up in their comic book movie universe, with casting an all-new Supes seeming to be the first step. With fellow-star Ben Affleck’s on-again, off-again role as Batman also reportedly on the rocks, it’s not difficult to speculate where the next step would go. “There’s a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work,” said the insider source.

As DC fans will unfortunately bid farewell to this version of Superman, Netflix will now have the all-clear to utilize Cavill’s talents for The Witcher. Outside his involvement, no other role has officially been filled, with the show is planning some controversial casting for at least one of the main characters. Netflix will release The Witcher series sometime in 2019.

What do you think? Are you disappointed we’ll never see Henry Cavill return as Superman again, or are you just glad he’s sticking around as Geralt? What do you think this means for the future of DC?
