The Witcher Devs Reveal New Botchling Concept Art

Witcher

The Witcher franchise inspired by the fantasy novels written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and developed by CD Projekt RED is having a birthday! To celebrate, the developers are bringing fans an inside look delving into some behind-the-scenes content from the game’s creation.

One of the most disturbing creatures players face in the Witcher franchise is the “Botchling,” a creature that resembles a highly deformed fetus and is born from improper burials of stillborn infants. While hiding underneath beds, Botchlings would sap the strength of pregnant women until they were weak enough for the monster to latch onto in order to feed directly, killing both the parent and child.

But it seems they could have looked much different in The Witcher as the creative team shuffled through different potential looks. In the post below, you can see the different directions the Botchlings COULD have gone by the time The Witcher 3 finally released:

There are some pretty crazy ideas here, with most looking like they came straight off of some kind of morbid horror set. In the end however, CD Projekt RED’s final version of a Botchling was definitely the right choice for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, especially considering how the “Family Matters” quest played out.

The Witcher 3 is available for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The Netflix series that hopes to take on the franchise is in the works as well, though there has yet to be an official release date revealed.
