Going into 2020, The Last of Us Part 2 was assuredly going to be one of the biggest games of the year. Despite some rough bumps in the road including allegations of toxic work environments at Naughty Dog, major leaks of the game’s story, and harassment from fans made towards the game’s cast and crew, the game did indeed prove greatly successful. The Last of Us Part 2 was already confirmed to be the fastest selling PlayStation 4 exclusive yet, but now, The Last of Us Part 2 launch has been confirmed to have earned other significant achievements.

NPD has released their new statistics based on video game sales for June of 2020. According to the information, The Last of Us Part 2 was the bestselling game of June, and has become the third bestselling game of 2020 behind only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. What was even more interesting knowledge gained from these sales numbers was in regards to The Last of Us Part 2’s launch period.

It seems that The Last of Us Part 2 launch had the best sales of any game’s launch period in 2020. Not only that, but this has been the second-biggest launch of any Sony title ever. The only Sony game to have surpassed it was the Insomniac Games Spider-Man title from 2018. It should be noted that NPD does not share the specific sales numbers themselves, only the rankings, and that they do not figure in Nintendo eShop sales into calculations. Still, Sony and Naughty Dog are surely happy with these results, especially after all the hiccups that came before the game’s launch. After all that’s happened in our world this year, even the light of a Firefly is enough to see in the darkness.
