Star Wars Fans Petition Netflix for a Franchise Mini-Series
We’ve all seen the massive resurgence of renewed excitement for the Star Wars franchise when Disney studios announced Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. It seems that the fans of this amazing franchise think that now with the growing momentum of the new films as well as the success of Netflix original series’, such as House of Cards, Narcos, and the several Marvel IPs, that now might just be the perfect time to jump start an episodic Star Wars based series.
The lore of the Star War universe is far more expansive than the snapshot of story that the cinematic productions give us insight into. This universe has been developed and cultivated across dozens if not hundreds examples of published literature creating a vast pool of rich narrative that can be drawn from to create any number of varying story archs within the Star Wars reality. In this specific instance the fans that have started the petition to Netflix have decided that the Old Republic narrative would be a perfect place to start.
The Knights of the Old Republic, and now the Old Republic Online, games were created by BioWare as narrative grounds with which to create some of the most original Star Wars prequel content to date. The Old Republic narrative tells the tale of the emergence of the first Sith empire, of the beginnings of the Galactic Republic, of the first Jedi civil war, and of the brave heroes who fought against the Dark side to preserve and maintain balance in the galaxy.
The Knights of the Republic series of games as well as the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic serve as the main vehicles to tell stories of characters such as Darth Revan, Darth Malak, Bastila Shan, Darth Traya, Meetra Surik, Darth Malgus, Satele Shan, and the list goes on. The popularity of this era in Star Wars history is felt throughout the fanbase, and I feel it would do a massive disservice to us if these stories weren’t told.
If Netflix and Walt Disney studios do decide to take to heart the petitions of the Star Wars fandom, the Old Republic narrative would most definitely provide a vast wealth of potential content from which to draw inspiration. And who knows, this could even open the doors to explore more expansive story lines in future major productions. We’ll just have to see what happens.
