Classic Star Wars Battlefront Multiplayer Support Returns To PC

Though it took a while for fans to get on board, EA’s new Star Wars Battlefront series has nonetheless forged a pretty dedicated fanbase, with the 2017 sequel still doling out regular content updates as recently as last week. With all this love for the reboot in mind, enthusiasm for the original 2004 Battlefront has nonetheless continued to endure, even as official support for the game has long since been abandoned. Well, it appears this particular omission no longer the case, as multiplayer support has made a surprise return for players on PC.

Recently going live on Steam, players discovered that online modes have been re-enabled for the classic Star Wars Battlefront, allowing anyone on the platform to play the game as it was originally meant to be experienced. As per the game’s update notes, the return of multiplayer arrived alongside newly-added support for more languages (French, Italian, German, Spanish), extended audio functionality, as well as “a number of menu and gameplay issues” related to screen sizes. In addition, multiplayer has also returned for Battlefront on GOG, featuring cross-play across both GOG Galaxy and Steam versions of the game.

While PC players were previously able to make do with third-party servers, the return of multiplayer in Star Wars Battlefront is likely to make any fan feel at one with The Force, especially as the game is currently discounted at 50% off ($4.99 USD) on both Steam and GOG. This big comeback is only the latest for the classic Battlefront, as the game had previously returned as part of the Backward Compatibility program for Xbox One. While the Microsoft release came without official online capabilities (though it did eventually add the Jabba DLC), perhaps multiplayer’s return on PC could leave open the possibility for Xbox One to receive the feature sometime down the line.
