Square Enix Launching “Major” 2019 Title, Final Fantasy VII and Avenger Speculation Rises

Given how long it took for Square Enix to churn out both Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, the Japanese publisher’s lengthy development periods have at this point become a playful joke, not unlike the bevvy of bugs (read: features!) in Bethesda Softworks games. That said, it appears that Square Enix will be releasing a “major” game in 2019, and Final Fantasy VII is on the list of potential titles that fit the bill for an upcoming release.

The news comes by way of a recent financial report that reviewed the Japanese publisher’s previous quarter, wherein president Yosuke Matsuda mentioned that the company would be releasing a “major” game in 2019. The timing of the report excludes Tomb Raider and Kingdom Hearts III, and as such this puts the spotlight almost solely on the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Another possible contender, though, is the as yet unannounced Avengers game that Crystal Dynamics has been working on. Given that Avengers: Endgame is releasing in a few months, it makes perfect sense to release an Avengers title at some point this year to build off the hype. There of course could be something else up Square Enix’s sleeves that they haven’t mentioned yet, though my personal hope is that we’ll hear something out of the FFVII camp, especially since the focus – both from SE’s marketing team and elsewhere – is off of Kingdom Hearts III.

Kingdom Hearts III is now available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
