A “Completely Original Story” Promised for Upcoming Square Enix Avengers Game

Square Enix Avengers Game

Many were surprised about Square Enix’s newest project announcement this past week, as they revealed their upcoming game based on Marvel’s Avengers. This new Square Enix Avengers game will involve Square’s Western developers, Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, who are both known for making expansive AAA gaming experiences.

The teaser video that was released earlier this week, however, did not reveal much other information about the project, other than the aforementioned involved parties and the presence of the big four Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Incredible Hulk) in the game. In the aftermath of this excitement, we now have some more clarity on this game’s details.

A new press release from Square Enix has given a more elaborate commentary on this new partnership. The press release confirms that The Avengers project will indeed have a completely original story, which would seem to be separate from previous comics and the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, but will contain characters, locations and iconic moments that will likely pay homage to the previous incarnations of the superhero team to some extent. The press release also shares Marvel’s trust in Square Enix’s ability to deliver a game that will match the quality we have seen in recent Marvel multimedia projects, saying:

The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

As we’ve seen Square Enix’s work with Disney properties in the Kingdom Hearts series, it might be safe to say that the publisher will do right by Marvel. What do you guys think?
