Sony To "Aggressively" Promote Mobile Games And Expand Its PlayStation Network Business

Sony recently held a financial conference call on March 31st for the end of its fiscal year, wherein Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki discussed at length information pertaining to the company’s different gaming businesses. A few of the topics touched upon included its PlayStation Network services, future promotion of mobile games, and its current business model.

As expected, the existing base of PS4 consoles worldwide combined with the expansion of PlayStation Network revenue has contributed greatly to profit growth, which in turn made the decision easy for Sony to continue to expand its “stable” network services business model. That said, the company will continue to focus on hardware penetration as well as software attach ratios.

As far as software attach ratios go, Sony is in an excellent position to kick off its fiscal year, especially with the massively popular God of War topping charts all over the world. As Kratos’ latest outing is a PS4 exclusive, the company has quite the edge over its competition, Microsoft and Nintendo. According to Totoki-san, the momentum for software sales is likely to continue, as are the profit margins behind its PlayStation Network services.

Sony To "Aggressively" Promote Mobile Games And Expand Its PlayStation Network Business

Of course, Sony Interactive Entertainment is only a small piece of the Sony puzzle. Its Music Entertainment branch is also profiting significantly from mobile games such as Fate/Grand Order for iOS and Android, and as a whole this mobile game- along with others – have accounted for roughly 30% of the operating income for the branch. As such, Sony plans to “aggressively promote” mobile games, especially given the spike in popularity of anime IPs.
