Skull & Bones Loot Boxes Will Put An Immersive Spin On In-Game Rewards
Many games incorporate a loot box system for various cosmetic and gear items for players to collect and use. Ubisoft’s upcoming pirateship title will put a new spin on the concept. Skull & Bones loot boxes will attempt to disengage from the standard by not breaking the immersion of the game to receive rewards. In an interview with Justin Farren, he mentions how the team hopes to successfully implement the Skull & Bones loot boxes
Farren explains that the developers behind Skull & Bones don’t want it to feel like a pay-to-win type of game and that everything loot-wise can be found and collected within the title. According to Farren, the game’s economy emulates that of the Indian Ocean, and as such – players will find that items important to the merchants and empires of the game are also important to the player. Players will track down resources they need and capture the ships which contains that obtainable loot.
So, what I don’t want to players to feel it is, that it’s some abstraction from the fantasy. It should feel like the things that you’re hunting, using your spyglass to see the things that are on board, should directly relate to the things that you need. But you know, there’s nothing more pirate-y than the treasure chest.”
As Farren says, “There’s nothing more pirate-y than a treasure chest” and gaining new loot is something they want to make feel organic within the game and not as though you need to pay in order to get the gear you want. Farren mentions that he wants the game to play as though when you run across a player with incredible gear, you know they had to work for it, they were at the right place at the right time and because of that, the player is rewarded.
So, if somebody sees your ship, they should know you’re a badass, or that you’re really invested in cosmetics. Or that you’ve got all the figureheads that represent you being in the right place at the right time to take down the right enemy. That’s super important to me. I play racing games, and when I see someone’s car that’s tricked out, I’m like, “How’d he get that?”
Skull & Bones is set to release sometime next year for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It’s good to see that the Ubisoft team behind the game is going this immersive route.
