Sir Patrick Stewart Retires From X-Men Film Franchise, Saying “I’m Done Too”

Patrick Stewart Retires

While many fans have been eagerly anticipating to see Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine in an R-rated film, most have been aware of the catch-22 that surrounds Logan. The dour, hyper-violent film has been declared to be the last X-Men film that Hugh Jackman will participate in (although he apparently would have reconsidered retirement if the Avengers came knocking at his door). Now, it appears that the other big character to return to the X-Men series in Logan is also making his final appearance, with the news that Sir Patrick Stewart retires his portrayal of Charles Xavier with the new film also.

In a new article on Entertainment Weekly, the announcement that Sir Patrick Stewart made regarding his retirement from the X-Men film franchise at a Sirius XM town hall has been shared. Stewart’s decision seems like it very well might have come recently, as he shares a story about seeing the final version of the movie in Berlin sitting alongside Jackman and the film’s director, James Mangold. While Stewart had seen the final version of the film before this instance, this particular viewing seemed to greatly move him, saying:

Maybe it was the company of these two guys, but the movie ended and — this is an admission — but at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing. I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.’”

Fan response has not been heard yet. However, given that the film has not released outside of Berlin, the high critical praise Logan has received thus far does point to this film likely reflecting Stewart’s sentiments regarding its salute to two important comic book character portrayals. Especially since they have been very important in helping kick off this modern wave of superhero films.
