Shadow Of The Tomb Raider Patches Out Intriguing Alternate Ending (VIDEO)
Lara Croft’s latest adventure Shadow of the Tomb Raider has been treating players to a third bout of exploration and survival for the reboot trilogy’s third and final entry. After all the relic hunting, puzzle platforming, and enemy stealthing is all said and done, the experience was poised to provide closure to the saga’s events as well as end on a satisfying note with fans. While many have been more-or-less content with Lara’s resolution, a rare few were able to experience an alternate version of events that ended the game on a pretty intriguing note. Spoilers for Shadow of the Tomb Raider follow.
Those who’ve experienced the game’s end know that Lara Croft opts to return to humble home life, an understandable feeling after taking on a world-ending Mayan apocalypse. The corresponding cut scene depicts Lara reflecting on her latest adventure at Croft Manor and leaving things pretty open for a tomb-raiding return down the line. However, some fans were able access an alternate version of this ending that teases a very particular future in mind for Lara, one that would reintroduce notorious old-school Tomb Raider villain Jacqueline Natla. Check it out below.
The alternate end in question establishes this retro callback in the form of an on-screen letter being delivered to Lara in the game’s closing moments, potentially hinting at a reimagining of the first Tomb Raider story sometime in the future. Other references in this cut include the presence of the retro title’s shuffling butler and much more traditional-looking interior of Croft Manor. This ending would essentially bring the entire series full circle by connecting the rebooted origins trilogy to the original 1996 game.
As it turned out, this ending would not be the one intended for public consumption, with the game’s Day One update meant to patch out the result from the final product. However, the cut scene was nonetheless discovered and confirmed on the Tomb Raider forums, prompting both excitement and confusion from all who came upon the news. Square Enix soon offered their definitive statement regarding the scene’s resurgence, clarifying that it was ultimately supposed to remain on the cutting room floor.
During the course of development on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, multiple post-credits scenes were explored. Unfortunately one of the directions that was considered, but not chosen, was mistakenly included in the game. The Day One patch fixes this error, along with many other improvements. As always, we highly recommend that our players install the patch to enjoy the complete and most up-to-date experience.”
Longtime fans may be upset to see such an easter egg-filled ending bite the dust, but Square Enix may have seen fit not to play their hand too early. Wherever the franchise goes, whether it be under threat from Natla or something completely new, players will likely be along for the ride. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
