SEGA Announces a New Publisher for Sonic the Hedgehog Comics

That didn’t take long, at all. You know what they say, “gotta go fast”! As quickly as the news for the conclusion of SEGA’s partnership with Archie Comics was revealed, the company announced the new publisher to take over the Sonic the Hedgehog comics. IDW Publishing, which has a wider variety of IPs under their handle in comparison to the previous, will be taking the helm from now on. This isn’t necessarily a surprise since the relationship between Archie and SEGA has gradually dwindled since last year, but it is likely that nothing could be stated officially deals were struck between the game company and IDW.

Slowly, but surely, the previous publisher took away all remaining traces of our blue, blurry friend off the website. Safe to say, it’s been a long time coming. Then again, it’s also very possible that as soon as SEGA announced the split up with Archie Comics, IDW stepped forward to talk. According to an official press release, plans are already in motion and teams are being created for the future of Sonic the Hedgehog comics:

Creative teams are currently being formed, and a publishing plan is now underway with more details to come at a later date. Writers and artists will be bringing their considerable talents to the comic book world of Sonic.

IDW‘s Chief Creative Officer, Chris Ryall, and Sonic the Hedgehog Chief Brand Officer, Ivo Gerscovich, both relayed their excitement for the new partnership. “We are ecstatic about this new partnership with IDW,” said Gerscovich. “We know they’ll serve as a good home for the new adventures of Sonic, his friends and foes.”

Rest assured, they’ve revealed that new comics are headed their way in 2018. In the midst of these exchanges, one of the more anticipated series Sonic Mega Drive: Overdrive had to be canceled because of the timing of it all. Though it has been completed by illustrator and writer Tyson Hesse, it couldn’t be published for legal reasons. However, depending upon how the three companies decide to divvy out the IPs, Overdrive may see its way out of the shadows.
