Producer Ivan Reitman Teases Future Ghostbusters Movies at San Diego Comic-Con

Although last year’s reboot of the iconic classic Ghostbusters wasn’t as commercially successful as it needed to be in order to guarantee a sequel, the franchise is far from being dead in the water. Producer Ivan Reitman was at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) this weekend and revealed that there are plans for more Ghostbusters movies in the future, including a new animated film.

During an SDCC panel on which Reitman appeared, the director of the original film was asked about the overall state of the franchise, which is when he revealed that the franchise’s next film would represent a significant shift in focus. This also implied that the next film’s protagonists may not even be human. “We have wonderful plans for an animated feature that we’re deep in design on already, and [it has] a really great story,” he revealed.

That’s going to surprise everybody, I think, when it comes out. We’re dealing with [the] ghost world quite a lot. We’re looking at the film from a ghost point-of-view, and the Ghostbusters from a ghost point-of-view. I think that would be something very interesting for you. And of course a new live-action film.”

The new live-action film Reitman mentioned may be based off of Ghostbusters 101, a comic book storyline by IDW publishing that used interdimensional portals as a way of getting two different teams to interact with each other. When discussing the positive fan reaction to both teams teaming up, he said: “It’s very rich and it gave me an idea for another film.”

During the panel, Reitman also revealed that one of the upcoming Ghostbusters movies would be released in 2019 with the intent to release a new film as close to the original film’s 35th anniversary as possible. “We’re going to try to tie one of our films close to that date,” he said.

So, thoughts on what these future Ghostbusters movies could be? What would you like to see in the next live-action film? Would you like to see a sequel to last year’s reboot of the franchise?
