The Matrix Reboot is Officially in the Works – Red Pill or Blue Pill?
Well, it’s official. The remake craze has claimed another title, and it looks like we will be delving back into the Matrix once again. After nearly two decades, Warner Bros. Studios is in the early stages of giving the film a refreshing face-lift, though according to sources at The Hollywood Reporter, it will be Zack Penn, not the Wachowski siblings, writing the script.
So far, there are no conclusive reports about the movie, so most of what we do know is “it’s in the works”. While it is confirmed that the original creators will not be involved in its direction, Warner Bros. is at least hopeful for blessing from the Wachowski siblings to recreate the dark and gritty world. No comment has been made from the studio on this development yet. To add fuel to the fire, there is rumor that Michael B. Jordan may be starring in the new version of the film. Again, reports on this casting choice are inconclusive.
One thing we do know for sure is that Joel Silver, the producer for the original trilogy, sold his interest in the films to the studio back in 2012 for $30 million. However, according to THR, Silver has approached Warner Bros. once again to renew the original film. There is also word that Keanu Reeves would have been willing to return for the reboot if the Wachowski siblings were involved in the film’s remake. In an interview with Yahoo Movies to promote his newest film John Wick Chapter 2, the now 52-year-old actor stated, “They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?” Looks like we won’t be seeing Neo again. If Warner Bros. sticks to their guns and keeps Penn at the helm, that is.
This isn’t the only film that Hollywood is remaking. Though it’s not quite as dark and deep as The Matrix, studios are currently working on remaking The Lion King, and they are going the live-action route for the film. Donald Glover and James Earl Jones will be playing the lead roles, with Glover as Simba and Jones reprising his role as Mufasa. Jon Favreau is also involved in the remake’s creation, directing the live-action cut of the classic Disney film.
Reboots. Reboots everywhere for a new audience. It’s a tricky business remaking classic titles beloved by many generations of fans, so it’s definitely going to be interesting seeing how Hollywood handles the task. So, now it’s up to all of you: take the blue pill and you wake up in a world where the remake of The Matrix doesn’t happen; take the red pill and see how far the studio goes to ensure the recreation is a resounding success.
So, what do you think of the possible reboot coming from Warner Bros. Studios? Were you a fan of the original Matrix movies?
