PS5 Storage Expansion Support Reportedly Going Live This Summer

The PlayStation 5 is a magnificent piece of hardware, though the device’s limited amount of storage has already caused bottlenecking issues for PS5 owners that wish to have more than a handful of triple-A games on their consoles at the same time. This issue is only exacerbated by the lack of support for internal PS5 storage expansion options, though Sony is apparently looking to add in support for internal storage drives by this summer.

This info comes by way of a recent report from Bloomberg. According to the site’s anonymous sources, Sony is working to implement official support for internal PS5 storage expansion options for this summer. Removing the PS5’s detachable “fins” will provide access to the internal slot that can house an additional hard drive. This additional slot has been disabled by Sony at launch, with the company promising that support would eventually come for it in a later update. This future firmware update will enable the additional storage drives found within the PS5, and the update will also unlock higher cooling fan speeds in order to ensure the console doesn’t overheat.

In regards to official Sony channels, the company doesn’t have much to say regarding the future update. “As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5,” a spokesperson said. “The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later.” With more triple-A titles slated to drop later this year, internal PS5 storage expansion support will certainly come in handy.
