PS5 Has Over 25 Games In Development, Sony Confirms
With the next generation of consoles only just getting started, so many possibilities exist from the innovative technologies at developers’ disposal. From the Quick Resume of the Xbox Series X to the DualSense of the PlayStation 5, the future is truly exciting regarding what’s in store for gaming. While either company has only offered a small taste of its respective plans so far, it looks like Sony is already getting a leg up on its first-party with over two dozen games currently confirmed to be on the way.
As revealed in a recent interview with Wired, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst confirmed upwards of 25 games are now in varying stages of development, with “nearly half” described as being “entirely new IP” by the outlet. While the majority of these in-the-works projects are completely unknown to the public, titles like Insomniac Games’ Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Forbidden West are said to be counted amongst them. Speaking on the subject, Hulst said:
“There’s an incredible amount of variety originating from different regions. Big, small, different genres.”
The above names are among the most high-profile coming to the PS5, but several other releases are also expected to debut sometime in the next few years. A new God of War sequel is confirmed from Santa Monica Studio alongside Ember Labs’ Kena: Bridge of Spirits and a 2022 entry to the Gran Turismo series. Undisclosed projects from Jade Raymond’s new studio and Firewalk Studios are also on the way. Of course, there are also rumors of a remake of The Last of Us coming from Naughty Dog.
The idea of 25 more PS5 titles on the way is sure to be exciting for fans, especially as platform-exclusive offerings have been decidedly sparse in the console’s early days. Equally as sparse has been the console’s availability in stores, which has led to massive shortages expected to continue well into the foreseeable future. With all that said, the PS5 has nonetheless proven to be a massive success for Sony, even amongst the global pandemic, with the company recording 7.8 million units sold in April 2021.
