Pokémon: The First Movie Remake Heads To Netflix Next Month (VIDEO)

The Pokémon franchise has released all manner of media in the years since it debuted, with an official card experience, video game, and long-spanning anime depicting the globally-popular Poké-world. Twenty-one epic-scale movies have also brought Pocket Monsters to the masses, the first of which, Mewtwo Strikes Back–called ‘Pokémon: The First Movie’ here in the west–receiving a stunning CGI remake early last year. While the nostalgic recreation was largely exclusive to its native Japan, Netflix has now announced an international debut for the film slated next month.

Revealed in a recent press release, Netflix confirmed that ‘Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution’ will premiere on Netflix starting February 27th, going live across all territories, save for Japan and Korea. The movie’s debut coincides with the yearly celebration of Pokémon Day, which marks the anniversary of the series’ origins in 1996 with Pokémon Red and Green. Check out the new English dub trailer below alongside an official synopsis.

When researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, they unleash a creation that goes against the very laws of nature: Mewtwo, a Legendary Pokémon intended for use as a tool of destruction. But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge—and Ash, Pikachu, and their friends find themselves at the center of its rampage! With the future of the Pokémon world at stake, will our heroes be able to overcome Mewtwo’s challenge…and will Mewtwo be able to find a new meaning for its life?”

Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution marks yet another anime adaptation hitting Netflix as of late, with features based on the likes of Ni No Kuni as well as Dragon Quest going live this and next month respectively. Earlier in January 2020 also saw the chance premiere of another Pokémon movie entirely in The Power of Us, the 2018 film animated in the series’ traditional 2D style. Netflix has certainly developed a notable anime presence in recent years and these recent debuts might just signal a new push for more high-profile projects to premiere on the service.
