Overwatch’s Jeff Kaplan Discusses Hero 26 – “Very Fun and Very Playable”
Anyone in the Overwatch community is rather familiar with the speculation that circulates prior to a new character being released. It has happened with each hero that has arrived post-launch, and up until the most recent reveal, fans were a bit anxious for Doomfist. Now that the gauntlet-wielding Talon leader has finally been introduced to players, who could Hero 26 be? Thankfully, game director Jeff Kaplan recently released a bit of information on who’s next.
In an interview, Kaplan briefly touched on the upcoming Hero 26. He said that the character is “very playable and very fun internally, and that’s all I’ll say. It’s not coming out as soon as you think […] but Hero 26 is already amazing.” It isn’t much, unfortunately, but it’s the beginning of the game’s next big can of worms. Who could this mystery character be? Since the title now has eight offense, six defense, six tank, and five support heroes, it might be safe to say they aren’t going to be another offense character. Also, defense is the only class that hasn’t received an additional face since release, so that could always be where Blizzard is heading.
While speaking about the addition of new heroes, Kaplan said, “I don’t think there’s such a thing as too many heroes, but I think we also need to come out with heroes at a good pace.” This can definitely be a good strategy because releasing new characters at a rapid pace runs the risk of player frustration. It likely wouldn’t allow anyone to truly hone in on a hero’s abilities, and it certainly would throw any meta into disarray. Of course, the Overwatch operatives aren’t the only aspects of the game. Speaking on this, Kaplan had this to say:
I think we can start to think of, you know, how does Overwatch express itself in other ways that go beyond the 6v6 team shooter that we know today?”
What say you, gamers? Will Hero 26 be grouped up with the likes of Junkrat and Hanzo, or do you believe Blizzard has chosen a different route? If Kaplan says “It’s not coming out as soon as you think,” does that take a BlizzCon announcement off the table?
