The Order: 1886 Developers Tease Future Sequels
During the first few months of the Playstation 4’s release it seemed like Sony was spotlighting The Order: 1886 as one of the PS4’s foundational new IPs. However, the original title was met with mixed reviews and there has been no official announcement for another game in the franchise since the release of the first title in early 2015. Players among those who enjoyed The Order:1886 have expressed interest in a sequel might find more fuel for their hopes in new statements from the game’s developers.
Ru Weerasuriya and Andrea Pessino, co-founders of The Order:1886’s developer Ready at Dawn, recently appeared on an episode of The Game Informer Show podcast, and provided comments implying that there will be more entries in the series in the future. When asked about upcoming projects, Weerasuriya had this to say:
“The best way to answer that without giving anything… how can I say this… Is there a future? Yes. That IP has a future. It’s definitely built in that IP. That future is already something that was built from the very get go, from the first day we started working on it. As you know, since you played the game and for the ones who played out there… there is a larger storyline. There is a macro story that keeps going, it’s an IP that is actually bigger than the storylines that we have created. So there are legs to this IP, definitely.”
When asked about whether or not Sony would continue to act as publisher of Ready at Dawn’s games, Weerasuriya replied “Well, you’ll have to ask Sony that.”
While I did not play The Order: 1886 myself, the reviews and discussions I heard about the game all mentioned that the game seemed too short and that it felt like it was meant as a preamble to a future title in the series by the story’s design. If a sequel does indeed happen, I’ll definitely consider giving the original game a try, especially if the werewolf enemies in the sequel start wearing late 1800s-style top hats and monocles.
