Nintendo Switch August 2020 Sales Break Industry Record

As the global COVID-19 pandemic wages on, much of the world’s population is looking to home-based activities to help pass time safely. One of the most popular forms of home entertainment and a source of refuge in these times has been gaming. Big releases, like The Last Of Us Part II and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, since stay-at-home orders were issued earlier this year, have been major hits. Given the more approachable nature of their games, Nintendo has especially seen great success this year and now it seems that the Nintendo Switch August 2020 sales numbers have broken industry records.

Nintendo Switch August 2020

The NPD Group has released its August 2020 sales numbers for the video gaming industry, with a particular focus on the Nintendo Switch August 2020 sales data. According to the records, the gaming industry raked in $3.3 billion in sales of hardware, software, and accessories in August, yielding wonderful results for the big three major game console platforms. It seems Nintendo particularly fared well, as their August sales for the Switch were the best August sales total for any gaming device in history.

Nintendo Switch August 2020

The Nintendo Switch August 2020 sales figures are especially notable when compared to Nintendo’s past. The August dollar sales total surpassed that of the Nintendo Wii in August 2018 – roughly the peak of that console – and twice as many Switches were sold compared to August of 2019. Another interesting tidbit is that half of the top 20 games sold in August 2020 were Nintendo-published titles, with only a few of them being initially-released this year.

Most would likely attribute these record-breaking statistics to the coronavirus pandemic increasing demand for lighthearted gaming, as well as the recent supply increase of Switch consoles and previously-scarce games like RingFit Adventure. Whatever the reason, Nintendo has no need to Switch up its sales strategy any time soon.
