New Witcher Game Confirmed For After Cyberpunk 2077

The Witcher franchise has become a bit of a runaway phenomenon as of late, with nearly every adaptation of the Andrzej Sapkowski series – books, games, and a Netflix series – receiving overwhelming popularity from new and old fans alike. The Henry Cavill-led show has undoubtedly attracted many new eyes to the magical saga, but the trilogy of RPGs from developer CD Projekt RED has arguably done the most in adapting the storied tales of Geralt of Rivia. It’s been several years since the studio last brought the open world to life, but it appears that yet another entry is now set to be in the works later this year.

As per a recent interview with Polish website Stooq (via Prima Games), CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński revealed a bit about the studio’s plans following the launch of their current project Cyberpunk 2077. The anticipated sci-fi title was confirmed to have a plethora of add-on content on the way (including a previously-confirmed multiplayer mode), but Kiciński also made reference to “another large single-player game” set in The Witcher universe that would begin development sometime after Cyberpunk’s release.

As CD Projekt’s two biggest divisions are said to have their hands full with Cyberpunk 2077, this new Witcher game was said to be underway by the studio’s “smallest team.” That being said, the project was suggested to be relatively large in nature, although it won’t be the Witcher 4 follow-up that one may have expected. “We have two worlds and within these worlds we want to create games – therefore all planned games are either ‘Witcher’ or ‘Cyberpunk,'” Kiciński revealed in a rough translation of the interview. “We just want to do a little more games – we’ll prove that we can do two big games at the same time, which will take us quite a few years.”

The Witcher series has produced a few spin-offs over the years such as a Gwent card game as well as a long-lost fighting game for browsers and mobile. However, if not a fourth main entry, it’s currently unknown what might come from this mysterious new Witcher game. From a speculative point of view, a standalone title featuring Ciri could feasibly be in the cards as the character was set up for a solo adventure during the events of The Witcher 3. There’s also a possibility of CD Projekt tackling a fighting game, especially as Geralt featured as a prominent roster member in 2018’s SoulCalibur VI.
