New Venom Comic Series Will See The Symbiote Facing A Powerful Ancient Evil

Venom Comic Series

The monstrous alien symbiote Venom is often considered one of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes, having caused the webhead a great deal of peril on many occasions. The character may regularly dole out terror as a Marvel villain, but Eddie Brock has also been known as a reluctant anti-hero when the situation calls for it. An upcoming Venom comic series aims to paint the alien ooze as a protagonist, facing off against an evil 1,000 years in the making.

In a reveal with Comicbook.com, the series’ creative force of writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman gave insight into Venom’s new adventure and what to expect in the issues ahead. Stegman goes on to hint at the series’ mysterious new threat, describing it as unlike anything the dual-identity creature has ever faced.

It’s something that’s incredibly old, and unbelievably powerful with ties to not only the symbiote’s dark past but the Marvel Universe itself. This is a horror story thousands of years in the making.”

Cates also spoke regarding the Venom comic series, revealing host Eddie Brock is not at all in a good place in the story’s opening moments. The future doesn’t seem to hold hope either, as a “disturbing” dynamic develops between human and symbiote.

Something has happened to his other that….well, I don’t want to spoil too much, but for the first time in a very long time, Eddie is scared of his own shadow. Something is changing between them. And it’s…disturbing, to say the least. But I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s a symbiote-focused story really. The greatest Venom stories, to me at least, are a mixture of the alien outside and the human inside.”

2018 marks the 30th anniversary of Venom’s first comic appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man, and Marvel has been celebrating the occasion with a number of featured symbiote stories. In addition to the wide-reaching effects felt by this upcoming series, there’s also a feature film based on the character headed to the big screen in October. Venom #1 will release in May.
