All-New Star Wars Trilogy In The Works – Everything Will Start From Scratch
While there are still a few weeks left until Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters, many have been pondering the future of the long-awaited sequel trilogy. Following the J.J. Abrams-directed Episode IX, no other film projects have been announced regarding the space operatic series. It seems the Force has finally awaked, as Lucasfilm has announced plans to introduce an all-new Star Wars trilogy with new characters and set even further away in the far, far, galaxy.
Lucasfilm has appointed The Last Jedi helmer Rian Johnson with the task of crafting an entirely original Star Wars trilogy from scratch, set apart from the main continuity. Collaborating with longtime producer Ram Bergman, Johnson is due to provide his writing and directing duties to the first entry of this new saga, and overseeing the other two films.
President of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, released a brief statement about the studio’s exciting and bold new direction. She calls Johnson a “creative force” that will do “amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.” Johnson and Bergman also commented on the news, with the duo fondly recalling their work on The Last Jedi, and praising their opportunity to contribute to the “modern mythology” of Star Wars.
This unprecedented move to create an unexplored side of the Star Wars canon shows incredible confidence in Rian Johnson’s upcoming film, and will undoubtedly raise expectations for its upcoming release. It is unknown if the Skywalker saga will continue on after the trilogy-ending Episode IX, but if it is truly the end, we’ll at least have this new Star Wars trilogy to quench our thirst for sci-fi adventure.
What do you think? Is a brand new Star Wars story exactly what the franchise needed, or is it a bad idea to abandon the characters we’ve become accustomed to?
