New Resident Evil 3 Remake Gameplay Details Revealed

Resident Evil 3 The board Game

Little less than a month remains before the Resident Evil 3 remake takes a page from Nemesis and demolishes its way into gamers’ lives. Just like the RE2 remake before it, the series’ third modern entry looks to have assembled quite a faithful reimagining of the original game, but with more than a few new inclusions to keep the game feeling fresh. With that in mind, an all-new assortment of information has arrived, detailing new gameplay features and confirming the return of some familiar ones from the original.

According to a recent feature in the Official Xbox Magazine (via Reddit), players can expect several enemies from the first RE3 to return such as the grotesque mutant Hunter Betas, worm-like Grave Digger, and various giant spiders. Zombies of Raccoon City are also said to behave differently in certain circumstances and may even start working together if ever in a group. As for the city itself, the entire map is described as “a lot bigger” than depicted in previous installments, with multiple pathways, backtracking, and fast travel available to the player at various intervals – with the city’s subway system naturally acting as a hub of sorts.

New Resident Evil 3 Remake Gameplay Carlos Hunter Beta

Jill Valentine may be the main protagonist in Resident Evil 3, but her companion Carlos is confirmed to be playable, though, not in his own campaign like in the RE2 remake. Outside his occasional sequences, players will also see a lot of Carlos as an NPC, sharing Jill’s mission of searching for survivors in Raccoon City. This focus on a single narrative is confirmed to be deliberate on the part of Capcom, setting out to tell the “classic story of Jill vs Nemesis,” but with more fleshed-out details. The likes of Jill, Nemesis, and Umbrella’s private military force, the U.B.S.C. are called out as receiving particularly more story than in the previous installment.

One initial inclusion of this report from Official Xbox Magazine was that the game’s main threat of Nemesis would be able to pursue players into the normally-safe confines of Safe Houses. However, according to a recent follow-up from GamesRadar+, OXM’s experience with the beast did not, in fact, take place in a safe room, but rather a general save area in the game. Capcom confirmed with the outlet that this assumption was a mistake, assuring that Safe Houses will indeed stay safe in Resident Evil 3. While this development does deprive Nemesis of some terror points, it’s probably for the best as the game looks to have plenty to spare already.

Resident Evil 3 releases for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on April 3rd.

What do you think? Are you bummed that Nemesis can be stopped by safe rooms, or do you feel it’s important for horror games to have this kind of escape? What’s your impression of the new gameplay?
